I am biased.
I served in the same battalion as the author, different company.
We remember things differently.
That is as it should be. No two people focus on the same things the same way at the same time.
We each bring away the things that shape us.

What I will tell you is that the author was always right in the thick of it. He didn't hide. He was right there where the Green Grinder chewed you up and spat you out, or you walked away from it more or less intact, maybe.
He. like me, drew the short straw time and time again for special ops .. meaning ops above and beyond regular platoon/company missions.
He won the right to his opinion by being there.

Buffgrunt memoirs of a tree vet Tommy J Skiens 9780615613581 Books Reviews

Tommy takes the reader on a personal tour of his time in Vietnam and offers a raw look at combat and the effect combat has on the veteran once he is back in "the world". His accounting is an in your face, pull no punches,honest,gut-wrenching and humorous walk on point. He will guide you into the jungle and paddies, teach you how to hide behind a blade of grass. He willingly and readily exposes his fears and his pains as he shares the horror and death the grunt faces in the bush. Ruck-up! You will not be sorry you read this book. Old Guard.

RVN 1967-1968
This is simply one of the best books I've read on the Vietnam experience and it's power to haunt those who lived through it so many years ago. The author, through his fiercely descriptive and occasionally humorous prose, places the reader in the war-torn jungles where no sane man should have walked. We see the war in all its horrible glory through the eyes of a soldier, a grunt, who pulls no punches in his storytelling. This is Vietnam as hell on earth. A place where one must scratch, kick, and claw to retain any semblance to humanity. Read this book and know how it was for some, during and after. And know the courage it took to tell the story.
The Author Tommy (Foxtrot) Skiens who served with the 11LIB Americal Division Quang Nghi Provience Vietnam 1968, should have been awarded the Silver Star Medal for his bravery in the mine field. Also for constantly risking his life to help combat wounded grunts. He vividly portrays the immense danger and hardships of a Combat Light Infantry Company that was engaged in prolonged S&D Missions against an elusive hard core enemy. Their AO was filled with a disproportionate number of mines, booby traps, and snipers. The book laced with humor portrays a man filled courage, professionalism, compassion, and humanity both as a warrior and a citizen. A well written in your face account of how a combat soldier survived in an outside the wire marathon of a combat mission.
